John Deere H Brakes

I"m in Iowa getting ready to haul a John Deere H back to Montana where I live. When loading it I found the brakes don"t work. The left one depresses all the way with very little effect and the right one is frozen solid. Most of the tractor is in good shape and it runs good.

I plan to get a manual but hope in the mean time someone can give me a little heads up on how to proceed to fix this problem.

Thanks,

Bob - Brakes on the "H" tractor gives everybody fits. In order to gain access, the rear axle housing assembly is removed from the tractor. Be sure to use reliable blocking in the process - be safe! Perhaps the most valuable tool for guidance is PC304 - the Parts Catalog for the JD-H. This document can be downloaded from the "jdparts" website, and if you need instructions for this - write me, or casll me (830) 627-0430. Also, take a short trip to the JD-H Restoration Site (URL below) - loads of free information there. Enjoy! (PatB)

I always like having actual pictures if I can, hope these give you a good idea of what your getting into. Be careful when pulling the brake drum that the bolt heads don"t pull out, its made from a rather soft metal.

One more bit of advise, before you pull the brake drum, try to back the brake adjuster off as much as you can. The shoes can place enough pressure on the drum to make its removal difficult.

Also, during re-assembly tighten the brake adjuster, or as most say take up the brakes before you test them. If the brake adjustment is loose and you push down on the brake pedal you may spin the brake cam around so it is in a non-working position. Then you have to take the axle housing off and reset the pedal and cam.

Don't ask how I know this. I 'm sure you can figure that one out.

Be sure to replace the seals or the brake linings will be oil soaked in a few minutes and you will get the opportunity to do the job over again. I made this mistake back in the 70s and have appreciated the simplicity of the open brakes on the A, B, etc. tractors.

I live in Bigfork. I"m in Townsend today, Sunday, visiting my brother. Will drive to Bigfork tomorrow.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
